Weight Loss Medications Are Changing the Way We Lose Weight

Semaglutide, tirzepatide and liraglutide (marketed as Ozempic, Mounjaro, Rybelsus, and Saxenda) are names we all know by now. Weight loss journeys that would have seemed unreachable a few years ago without surgery are now genuine clinical results.

But there's another part of the story: when the body sheds weight, it often sheds not only fat but other things too.

A woman in gray workout clothes uses the Whole Body Vibration Training Exercise Plate with resistance bands indoors, exercising in front of large glass doors with views of a garden and brick wall outside.

The number on the scale doesn't tell the whole story

The scale measures total weight: it doesn't distinguish between fat, muscle, water, bone. That's why two people can both lose 20kg and end up with very different bodies.

Systematic reviews of GLP-1 therapies report that somewhere between 25% and 40% of total weight lost can come from lean mass, with some variation depending on the medication and the pace of the loss. This isn't unique to the newer drugs either: similar, sometimes higher, proportions show up after bariatric surgery too. It's a feature of rapid weight loss in general, which is exactly why it's so important to look at the quality of the result, not only at the size of it.

Why muscle is more than how you look

Muscle is the tissue that holds everything else up: joints, posture, balance. It's also the main engine behind resting metabolic rate, the energy your body burns even when you're doing nothing. Less muscle mass means a slower metabolism, and a slower metabolism makes keeping weight off, over time, harder.

Then there's bone. Bone stays dense when it receives mechanical load, meaning when muscles pull on it and challenge it through movement. When muscle mass drops, that stimulus weakens too.

These are well understood mechanisms, and they simply need managing.

Movement doesn't get a pass, if anything it matters more

These medications work on one thing: appetite and the resulting calorie intake. They don't work on body composition, which depends on what you do with your body while the weight comes off.

During a fast weight loss phase, like the ones these medications make possible, the approach has to be multidisciplinary by necessity: medical oversight to check protein and nutrient levels, and consistent movement, which is not an optional add-on at the end of the journey, but something present from day one. And that goes for everyone, not only for those on this kind of journey.

Vibration plates: an accessible way to movement

Someone starting a weight loss journey, perhaps after years of inactivity or with little experience of structured exercise, isn't always ready to walk into a weights room. That's where a vibration plate can offer a gentler entry point, helping build the habit while supporting the whole body.

The mechanism of a vibration plate is straightforward: mechanical vibration triggers a series of reflexive muscle contractions, dozens per second, that the body wouldn't otherwise produce just standing still. Studies using surface electromyography have measured neuromuscular activation within minutes of exposure, with the effect increasing alongside vibration frequency.

But the effect doesn't stop at the muscle. Systematic reviews also report that whole-body vibration training is associated with increases in muscle temperature, blood flow and oxygen consumption in the tissue involved. In practice, more oxygen and more nutrients reach working muscles, with a knock-on benefit for microcirculation too.

It's no coincidence that vibration training is also studied in populations with reduced muscle mass linked to ageing: a randomised pilot study in people with sarcopenia found a measurable improvement in voluntary quadriceps activation after twelve weeks of vibration training. A small signal, but a consistent one: even people starting from a more fragile position can get a genuine muscular response.

One piece of the puzzle, not the whole solution

Weight loss medications remain an important clinical tool, and lasting, genuine wellbeing gets built by working out alongside the medication, not by waiting for it to do everything on its own.

Movement still takes centre stage. For anyone getting back into movement while their body is changing quickly, a Bodi-tek vibration plate can be the first accessible step, one that keeps supporting future strength training too as the body grows stronger and ready for more.

Losing weight well means arriving at the finish line with the structure to carry it. Not just a lower number on the scale, but a body that number can actually hold up.

Weight management is only one part of the health equation.

For anyone using GLP-1 medications, maintaining muscle, bone strength and physical capability remains essential. This is where Bodi-tek's whole-body vibration technology comes in: a low impact training stimulus that encourages muscle activation and skeletal loading, without asking more of the body than it's ready to give.

By supporting strength and movement through periods of change, Bodi-tek keeps the focus on how the body functions, not just how it looks.
